This mid-terrace Victorian house in Stoke Newington had suffered neglect of its building fabric over recent years and was in need of extensive modernisation and repair. This provided a perfect opportunity to re-model and extended the house to suit our client’s needs.
Our clients wanted to create a very light and spacious area where they could relax and also socialise with their friends. Another important requirement for the design was that the new space flowed into the newly landscaped courtyard garden in a seamless way.
We removed an existing lean-to conservatory structure to the back of the house and opened up the flank wall to the side of the rear addition. This allowed us to build a large new extension to the side and rear of the main house. The first floor structure was supported by new structural steel beams and columns encased in the ceiling and walls. As with previous projects, we fitted a sliding door system that folds neatly to one side to create an opening into the garden area the full width of the house. Above the side return we installed a frameless glass roof that brought lots of natural light into the kitchen area.
The kitchen units and other joinery items was custom made by Luke Thompson of Thompson Brothers Ltd. The polished veneered surfaces and stainless steel island cooker hood combine with the cool grey porcelain tiles to give a very stylish finish.
