Durham Rd, E12

This Victorian property in the Woodgrange Conservation Area in Forest Gate retained many of its original decorative features within the main part of the house. However, the rear of the structure had been insensitively altered in the 1970’s with the addition of a lean-to conservatory to the side return and a poorly laid out kitchen space.
Our client, a local GP, was very keen to ensure that the new layout would provide him with an ample space for entertaining dinner party guests as well as also significantly improving the kitchen layout.

Another requirement was to incorporate a wood burning stove into the design so that he could spend relaxing evenings sitting by a natural fire after a busy day in his surgery.

We proposed the removal of the lean-to conservatory and opening up the entire flank wall of the old kitchen area in order to create a large kitchen and dining space formed by the new extension.

The large rectangular roof light and fully glazed sliding folding door system allows plenty of natural light into the interior spaces. Artificial lighting is provided by a combination of recessed halogen down lighters and surface mounted up lighters.

The kitchen area uses Impala black granite worktops laid on IKEA Nexus Beachwood units. The stainless steel appliances consist of a Falcon 6 burner cooking range and Smeg fridge freezer unit. The floor finish to the working part of the kitchen is in large element grey porcelain tiles laid flush finished to the solid Oak strip floor to the dining area.
